Goats are valuable in Malawi. They represent a future - either by natural increase
of the herd, enabling sales for cash, or food-on-the-hoof.
We "loan" a young female
local goat to a vulnerable, yet carefully assessed home, as a basis for a small business.
When the goat has kids, a healthy young female is returned to redeem the original
one, which is then the property of the owner having proved capable of care.
Each approved family builds a “khola” (goat house) with help from OHP. These are traditionally off the ground for protection against wild animals, and to preserve the droppings for manure.
As a pilot scheme, we’ve set up some “Goat Clubs”. These are community “Loan-A-Goat” schemes, based around proven groups of volunteers. Gathering goats will ease monitoring, encourage community enterprise, whilst providing nourishing milk to the local children.
A new “khola” passes inspection
This youngster is placed in another assessed home and the process starts again.
MERCY PROJECTS are usually people-centred rather than community-based. They cover a whole range of gifts to help individuals and their families to face the future with changed lives. It might be a little financial help to set up a small business, or take a child to hospital. It may be supplying mosquito nets, blankets, seeds - or a goat! It may even be rebuilding homes of vulnerable families after torrential rains and floods have destroyed them. Whatever it is, it’s aimed to encourage self-sufficiency, not dependency.
