Our most recent project. Until we can increase our milk yield, our Milk Programme has only been available to a handful of acutely vulnerable children. However, wives of some of our staff were concerned to ensure that this precious milk should go only to the specified children, so formed voluntary teams to supervise it’s distribution. Often they found the children unwashed, unfed, and neglected, so they went in each day, bathed the youngsters, washed their clothes and cleaned their space. It seemed a better idea to gather the children together so they asked for a Centre where they could give the children loving attention, as well as nourishing food and opportunities to play, develop and socialise.
The disused building ripe for conversion into our “Play Centre”
It seemed unlikely that there would be a suitable building, empty and available, but within a few days we had the perfect place, loaned free of charge by the government because they’d heard about our plans. With the blessing of our Village Head we set about renovating it, making it safe and secure for the children. It consists of a lock-up room - for food, toys, firewood and all the paraphernalia needed for cooking, washing and record-keeping - and a great, airy, secure space for children to play. It even has a smooth cement floor - a rare luxury in Malawi, that will help easy cleaning. As resources permit, the Centre will be able to take more children, giving each a chance to thrive and survive.
One other important benefit - Margaret, little Pemphero’s 6 year old sister, is able to go back to school confident her little sister is now in safe hands!
