Encouraging News!

May has been a busy month for our agri staff. Apart from caring for the breeding pigs on site and the land growing food, they’ve been monitoring and gathering the results of various community projects.

Last November the latest phase of our Irrigation Veg Project was launched, providing watering cans and giving seeds—backed up with chemicals to protect and enhance crops—to 50 families in 13 villages. The results have been collected and collated, and show encouraging success.

Tomato, onion & mustard seeds were distributed, according to the recipients choice, along with cassava stems.  The results show that collectively, about 8 tonnes of tomatoes were grown, and in just 1 village—Makhonja, 5 villagers harvested over 2 tonnes of onions between them! These crops of course were not only for their families’ food, but gave them goods to sell to meet more of their household needs.

And we’re anticipating good harvests in other areas too.  Cassava is doing well, villagers plan to harvest in the dry season to allow the tubers to dry out thoroughly. Sweet potatoes are also thriving, some have already begun to harvest, and the young fruit trees recently planted, are being looked after carefully and irrigated when necessary.

Good news in an environment of increasing hunger…..
