Transforming communities with bridges!

There’s only one tarmac road in our area, and the rest are rough dirt.  Each of these are subject to erosion in torrential rain and storms, leaving inconvenient & dangerous crossings, especially in the rainy season where lives can be at risk.

This particular main road connects villages to schools, health centres, markets and water supplies, but is broken in 3 places where bridges are needed.

During May, the first bridge was constructed.  All the foundations were deeply dug by hand, and stone piers erected, specially angled to channel potential flood water to prevent erosion of the banks.

These were then straddled by huge purpose-cut treated logs and surfaced with timbers. Finally the river bank edges were filled in and the work complete.

The local villagers, eagerly anticipating this development, had provided and transported the stone and sand for the builders as their contribution to the project, and we provided cement, and the other materials, plus a team of experienced builders.

This has changed lives and provided safe and simple access for the hundreds of villagers and schoolchildren that use this route daily.

The communities along this road, as well as the Senior Chief, shared  their gratitude for this major bridge development, declaring: “their dreams have come true”!
